PHILADELPHIA, PA
- PHA's annual Toys for Tots campaign has again topped all
previous efforts, thanks to the generosity of PHA employees and
business partners. Toys were distributed to 623 PHA children, and
turkey dinners were delivered to their families. (Top of the Clock,
a company that provides security services to several PHA buildings,
provided the turkeys for approximately 100 of the
families.)
At festivities at the Philadelphia Housing
Authority's Wilson Park community center in South Philadelphia,
Executive Director Carl Greene announced that toys were being
distributed to families selected based on need.
"This can be a very difficult time of year
for children whose families can't afford a traditional American
holiday, " said Greene. He pointed out that the gifts were largely
the result of so many PHA employees buying tickets to the annual
holiday fund-raising party.
"Our employees work together every day to
help make Philadelphia a better place to live and they showed that
same spirit in supporting our kids through this campaign."
Tenant Support Services, Inc. (TSSI)
organizes the fund-raiser and toy distribution each year. TSSI
Director Asia Coney said she was overwhelmed by the team spirit of
PHA employees in supporting the campaign. She said seeing that kind
of participation makes all the effort worthwhile.
"Helping low-income families is our
job at TSSI, but Toys for Tots is a passion. We work toward this
event all year long and it is worth every ounce of effort," she
said.
Tenant Support Services is a non-profit subsidiary of PHA,
specializing in services for residents. PHA is Pennsylvania's
largest landlord, serving about 84,000 residents.
